Target Heart Rate and Training Zones

Target heart-rate zones translate exercise intensity into beats per minute. They can help structure easy, moderate, threshold, and high-intensity sessions, but estimated maximum heart rate varies substantially between individuals.

Formula and calculation methods

Karvonen target = resting HR + intensity × (maximum HR − resting HR)

Haskell–Fox

The familiar 220 − age equation. It is simple but has wide individual error.

Tanaka

Maximum HR = 208 − 0.7 × age, derived from a broad meta-analysis of healthy adults.

Nes

Maximum HR = 211 − 0.64 × age, another population-based estimate.

How to interpret your result

Karvonen zones use heart-rate reserve and therefore account for resting heart rate. Percentage-of-maximum zones are simpler. Zone 2 supports easier aerobic work, while zones 4 and 5 should generally be used in shorter doses with adequate recovery.

Limitations and safety

Heat, dehydration, altitude, caffeine, stress, illness, and medications can shift heart rate. Beta blockers and some rhythm conditions make standard zone equations unreliable. Stop exercise and seek care for chest pain, faintness, or unusual shortness of breath.

Is a tested maximum better than an age formula?
