Ideal-weight formulas were developed for clinical estimation and do not account for muscle mass, body composition, or frame size. Treat the results as references, not targets.

Ideal Body Weight Formulas and Healthy Ranges

Ideal body weight (IBW) formulas were created largely for clinical dosing and population estimates—not to define how a person should look. Comparing several formulas is more informative than treating one number as a universal target.

Formula and calculation methods

Healthy BMI weight range = BMI boundary × height²

Devine

Originally proposed for medication dosing; it starts at a base weight at five feet and adds weight for each additional inch.

Robinson and Miller

Later formula variants that use different base weights and increments, producing slightly different estimates.

Hamwi

A commonly cited clinical rule of thumb based on sex and height above five feet.

How to interpret your result

The calculator reports four estimates side by side and a broader BMI-based range. Differences between formulas are expected. Body composition, frame size, ethnicity, disability, age, and athletic development are not fully represented.

Limitations and safety

These adult formulas should not be used as growth targets for children or teenagers. They also cannot distinguish muscle from fat and may be misleading for strength athletes, pregnant people, or people with fluid retention.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one medically perfect ideal weight?

No. Health cannot be reduced to a single weight, and all IBW formulas are approximations.

Why do the four formulas disagree?

They were developed from different assumptions and use different base weights and per-inch adjustments.

Does age change ideal body weight?

Most classic IBW equations do not include age. Age can still influence muscle mass, bone density, and appropriate health goals.

Should I aim for the middle of the BMI range?

Not necessarily. Discuss personal targets with a qualified clinician who can consider body composition and medical history.
